I am in the process of rebuilding the lad's test engine (not sealed) and would appreciate some advice.

In particular, I would appreciate some words of wisdom regarding the squish clearance for the W60. Prior to dismantling the engine, I measured the squish at 1mm @ narrowest, 1.27mm @middle and 1.55mm @widest. This was with 0.3mm + 0.1 mm (total 0.4mm)gaskets in place.

Has anybody found any significant improvement (or deterioration) in performance in lessening or increasing the squish clearance ?

From what I understand, the middle measurement must be a minimum of 1mm (including carbon build up on the piston crown) to pass scrutineering for MSA. Also, I gather that a smaller clearance can result in increased low end power (but higher running temperatures), with a larger clearance helping with top end speed.

Has anybody had any joy in altering these setups ? I was thinking of setting up two different engines - one for slower twisty tracks, and one for higher speed tracks. Is there an optimum clearance or is it a case of 'suck it and see' (ie testing) ?

I have also got and old S60 engine (not yet stripped). Are the older and possibly heavier cranks worth transplanting into a W60 ? If so, can you use the same con-rod etc ?

Any help from any budding (or established !) engine builders out there would be greatly appreciated.
