Dean - we were invited by MBKC on saturday to show and test KGP as some of their members had expressed an interest in running KGP in 2013. We were happy to travel up had half a dozen members try it out (without any charge to the club or drivers) with great success and have recieved positive feedback.
I have to say that the atmosphere at MBKC was great and I really enjoyed the day, everyone was friendly and we were looked after ! We had a decent amount of track time at one of the UK's great circuits.
You are right though ,karting is at a difficult point. I think costs are too high, too many so called teams ( i.e I have a tent so i can charge you !) which has led to people being bled dry under the illusion that they cant race on their own - even at a club meeting. And then of course there is the black magic of the engine builders !
I am very pleased that the Iame 60cc engine was chosen by the MSA, having run its sister engine in easykart for the last three years the 60cc engines are very equal, maufactured to a very high standard and have a simple yet effective engine fiche. An engine can be run for at least 20 hours between services which are at a very low cost to perform. I for one, hope it will end the nonsense of the cadet engine builders and it will give karting a chance to grow from the roots again - people dont realize how important the cadet class is to the future of karting.
TKM, KGP are simple karting classes that can be scrutineered easily, maintained at a low cost or by the owner themselves and each provide a different level of lap time performance depending on the experience a driver wants. Its important to have a choice of classes IMO - if a class is well regulated and supported by the manufactuer or importer, well costed for the drivers, I believe this is the key for it to grow at all levels.
We all love our sport , this is my 27th year (im now 40!) a driver will race if they enjoy what they are driving and if they feel their equipment is competative and affordable to run.
I believe that if any kind of cheat is exposed, competitors or engine builders alike, that they actually excluded full stop -end of. Otherwise how can you line up on the grid the following month - it just sends out all the wrong messages and IMO this is also destroying karting.
Then and only then can a driver think that maybe just maybe I have a chance of winning - if the realistic chance of winning is not there people wont race or even try to compete. The fact that a driver may never have the actual personal ability to win will always be there and we will never fix that !
My apologies for rambling was only going to post to thank MBKC ! - but hey thats the passion of karting !
best
Andy Cox
