They used asbestos string when I worked there 26 years ago!! Probably outlawed now with health & safety rubbish but it was the best material to use as it didn't burn when heated to extremities.
They also used a plain cotton packing or a copper wire dependent on the application. Just cut a cross section and unwind it to see what they use now.
