QoT pointed out how INCREDIBLY flexible the Pod Bars really are. He asked me to compare the thickness and the 'joints' of the chassis rails (which run broadly parallel to the pod bars) with the pod bars. When you look at it in the cold light of day, you realise how LITTLE a side pod bar can contribute to 'stiffness' of the chassis. Usually, they are only bolted in with a LIGHTEST of 'clamping actions' with a single M6 set-screw. Once I looked at it like that, my historic beliefs looked plain silly!

He also pointed out to me how much LOOSER the connection of the rear bumper was to the chassis than it had been when I we were lads. My old bumpers were the same diameter as the chaassis rails, were sometimes THICKER WALLLED than the chassis rails and were bolted in, through an insertion into the rear chassis tube. They were then clamped to the Bearing Hangers, too. They often had upper and lower tubes. Now, rear bumpers are of thin, single tube held in by a compression clamp mounted in rubber. There really IS no comparision: old bumpers COULD be loosened to have an effect, modern ones clamped TIGHT have a FRACTIION of the resistence of our old ones mounted floppily! Again, David was pointing out common sense and that I had failed to notice the slow change over the years!

I think he's right. Adjusting the clamping of the side pod bars simply does NOT make a significant difference: nor does the clamping of the rear bumpers! Dave had shown me that I was suffering 'placebo effect' and 'emperor's new clothes' too! Before he pointed it out, I would have laid MONEY that altering the clamping changed the handling!
