The Ł20K was for placement years between second and third. I recently had a graduate start on more money than me (I was 45 year old senior lecturer, not insubstantial), and then get offered a 50% pay increase to stay with the team for the next year. Believe it or not, he moved on for a small wage cut, having decided doing what he wanted to do was worth more than money. (Actually said to me, "I have no way of spending it anything like as fast as they give it to me, as they are paying for my digs as well...")

A funny old world, but it can be good. Didn't for a minute think you sounded uppity. I'll bet the graduate salaries are better in the USA, but the engineering skills shortage means they are improving here at a dramatic rate. The employers are learning that talent that makes you money needs to be looked after.
