"We only disagree on whether the SCALE of the change of 'stiffness' could be detected by the stopwatch or the driver"
I can only report back our experience, by cutting around 15mm of each end of the axle in the lathe transformed the karts handling.
It changed from being an unpredictable sod of a kart to being docile and very predictable which of course allows you to push hard, the net result was a consistent 3-4 tenths per lap quicker in all conditions.
The findings above are certainly no placebo effect as the improvements are to my knowledge seen across Intrepid and OTK product range, when running the MOJO tyre, OTK have for some time now produced a 'short' axle to satisfy customer demand.
I have no more to offer by way of an explanation other than this trend started when the MOJO tyre was introduced so I have to believe that it was the tyre design, which has an unusually stiff side wall, that has driven this change in 'standard' setup.
As ever the stopwatch rules the day.
