I'm one of the few that has pervered with TAG TKM throughout my time learning to set up and drive a kart. I know itpro is RIGHT, but I struggled JUST a BIT TOO MUCH trying to learn to start a kart on my own, mainly due to the fact that easy start wheels in good working order are thin on the ground nowadays.

I'm a little too heavy for TAG, but at 9 stone you won't have a problem. The TAGs are different from the DD engines in such small ways, but you still have to compensate in the way you set them up. I generally have to run a slightly longer exhaust flex than the DDs, and will generally have a tooth or 2 more on the back sprocket to get drive out of slow corners. This is OK because you can hang a few more revs on the TAG engine and still be making power due to the bigger exhaust. They do seem a bit slower than DD out of corners, but I think probably have the legs on them at the end of the straights. The issue is that if you make a mistake on the way into a corner you will often lose a place. If you see a DD make a mistake on the way into a corner it can be really hard to get an overtaking manoeuvre to stick, as they recover speed a bit quicker.

In terms of reliability, not terrible, but not bomb-proof like a Rotax. The biggest problem is getting to know what's going wrong at what to do about it. And because there are so few of us running them, it can be hard to get decent advice on what the problem might be.

Comparing them with Rotax is a bit silly, as the TKM TAG still fits within the ethos of the formula. I'm rebuilding my original TAG engine just now. The piston has 18 hours on it, and I'm only reboring because I feel like it ought to have a new one. It's actually fine. Total parts cost for the rebuild is under £200, and with a Rotax I wouldn't even be allowed to do the work myself.

I'm just building a "clutched" engine for my kart at the moment, but I'll keep at least one TAG engine whatever happens. I love the DD engines, but as I'm a one-man-band the starting issue is a deal breaker for me until I can find an easy start wheel that works.
