Look at this logically.
1) I don't know where you race but, if it's like most meetings, then the same 3 guys will USUALLY (over a season) be the CONSISTENT podium finishers. The same 3 guys win each meeting! Ypu should thus assume that those 3 actually KNOW what they are doing! It doesn't matter if it's just 2 guys or 5 guys... the principle is the same.
2) You would need to be a brave and impressive person to think you know BETTER than they do and thus, it would be a good dtarting place to 'copy' those top three.... until you are up-there with them on a consistent basis. This is particularly true about the frequency of rebuilding their engines
So... what you'll find is that, if you are racing in a Non-MSA type race, then PROABABLY, they won't be rebuliding their engine (in ANY class) more often than the quoted 'standard' for that engine.
But... if you are racing at (for example) at a good club, then THAT top-three will be rebuilding their engines quite a BIT more frequently than the recommended minimum.....
Finally, if you want to win at NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP levels then it will NOT be unusual for the Q*U*I*C*K boys to rebuild the engine over-night of a two day meeting......
Basically, winning is NOT only about your preparation to a 'standard', it is preparing to an equal or BETTER level than your oposition!
So, rebuilding once-a-year or once-a-day depends on how fast you want to BE and against whomk you are racing!
Thus, you will get people who will tell you that once-a-year is enough and others who will tell you that once-a-day is the CORRECT amount.... that's if they are willing to tell you the TRUTH, of course!
