Yes, all data can be processed ‘by hand’. However, the last 60 years have shown us that computers can analyse data F*A*S*T*E*R than humans can and that such speed has made things possible that were simply VASTLY too laborious to process before computers!
Taking something as simple as the basic Mychron 3: the software allows you to enter the weight of the kart and then produce the plot of the 'BHP' (power) produced by the engine across the rev range. If you then change any parameters about the motor, you can then display the change in power-output at every single ‘point’ on every lap of every heat for your whole weekend. If you store that data, you can then compare each race MEETING to all others throughout a year or subsequent years!
Mathematically, it's all pretty simple; the software simply calculates the rate of change in the revs and, by knowing the mass of the object being accelerated, it can calculate the power needed to accelerate the kart at that rate. The Mychron and its software does that for every 10th of a second for the WHOLE WEEKEND..... The calculation and display of that data takes, perhaps, 5 seconds and will tell you the 'bhp' being produced at EVERY moment throughout a race weekend.
This lets you visualise the changes to you kart when you change (for example) your jetting: you can SEE how the power curve has changed as you can overlay one trace over another
Yup.... you COULD calculate that same data.... by hand..... as Paul suggests..... but..... trying to do that for every 10th of a second for the whole weekend might be just the SLIGHTEST bit..... tedious.....
The Basic Alfano is tolerable for lap times and revs..... but as a device to produce and download analysable data to a PC.... it's a JOKE! Even the old Mychron 3 does a STUNNING job and its data analysis available for seriously cheap money is simply astounding!
Be aware, you STILL need lots of time to review the data it produces on the PC..... not because it's complex to analyse: it's just that it produces VAST quantities of usable information which can be daunting to assimilate. However, the trick is to see what it can do, decide which 'displays' are useful to YOU and work on those while considering which others of the 'displays' might work for YOU, later.
Finally, even the basic Mychron 3 displays (for example) the whole weekend's rev-data via its own screen. Effectively, you can re-watch the revs of your engine for each race of a whole weekend once back in your kitchen. You can thus SEE what was happening to your kart.... even if you DON'T have a PC! Try doing THAT on a basic Alfano!
I've said it a hundred times before: there's simply no contest between the basic Mychron and the basic Alfano!
