1) I don't know about the benefits of the old spring clutch as I haven't run it, but in principal, I prefer the solid type purely from a simplicity point of view. The only downside to the solid type is that a worn clutch is faster than a new one.

2) The Tryton carb that we use here is the biggest pile of rubbish ever used in karting. It was introduced because people weren't happy with the performance differences between Tillotsons. However, the Tryton has just as large variances, is infinately less reliable, and considerably harder to set. For us, it is also considerably more expensive (Ł120 for the Tryton, Ł50 for the Tillotson). The Tryton is faster though.

In short, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Stick with the Tillotson.
