On the reeds you need to look for cracks, bits missing, screws missing etc, just general maintenance. If you take off the bowl of the carb and turn it upside down you will see what is basically a metal flap (with several prongs) on a hinge, if you remove the hinge you will find the shut off valve below this (be careful as the plunger is not held in) just pull the plunger out and inspect the tip (its rubber so also check for nicks etc) and also inside the chamber it came out of to check for foreign bodies.
