I am pretty sure it will be the wires coming from the ignition to the coil. They are probably cable tied to the coil causing quite a sharp turn in the wires. If you cut the cable tie off you can straighten the wires out then run your finger nail along the wires you can normally feel where the break inside is the plastic outer cable. This will explain why the fault is is intermittant as the wires inside are sometimes contacting and sometimes not. I had this years ago with an elderly motor which I had professionally joined by an auto electrician (this is legal by the rulebook). DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO SOLDER THE WIRES ! I am puzzled why you want a direct drive to tick over. You only need the Butterfly set marginally open. If the tickover is high the engine will run into corners making braking less effective. You really do not want a tkm to tick over on a stand etc as all you will do is oil it up and make it start badly next time. If you do start it on the stand just blip the throttle straight away then stop it with the brake pedal immediately. Hope this helps Phil
