I've always used ATF.

How can you say it isn't designed for this purpose?

It can spend years being abused in automatic gearboxes so it is hardly going to suffer in a Rotax gearbox.

Car manufacturers also use it in their manual gearboxes.

The gears only drive a small balance shaft and a water pump and there is no strain on the gear train.

It plays no part in the final drive course.

100ml of Mazola would probably work just fine too!
