Alex,
You are obviously searching for someone to give you answers which can only really be decided by you.
Why don't you get yourself down to the next Forest Edge meeting for Saturday practice. They run a non-MSA licence holder session there along with the other test sessions.
There seem to be several options.
1)Ring up 'Let's Go Karting' and see if they can give you some laps for a fiver in a Rotax powered kart.
2)Ring up someone like Ron Shone at Tabor and (for a few hundred pounds,) hire a full Race kart (Formula Blue) for the day. It may sound like a lot of money for 10 minutes an hour (from 10:00 till 17:00 but it is a 'proper' race kart and race engine, with no detuning.
3) See if someone on this site might let you try a kart on a "you bend it, you mend it" basis (though note, if you total someone's race machinery, it can set you back £3000!)
I used to do the latter, but borrowers caused some serious damage (bending axles etc) and then got very upset at the cost.
4) Just keep on dreaming.
