Does your starter make ANY noise when you press the starter button?
If it does, then it is unlikely you have a starter problem but a bendix problem.
If you can hear the starter whirring but it doesn't engage the stater ring gear to turn the engine, it is usually caused by chain lube accumulating in the bendix mechanism and preventing the bendix flying out into the teeth of the ring gear.
The way it works is that when you first press the start button, the bendix is thrown rapidly out into the ring gear teeth.
As you continue holding the button, the engaged bendix then turns the ring gear.
If it fails to get thrown out immediately, it will usually make a nasty noise, which is the gear slipping on the back of the ring gear.(Clutch backplate if you like).
DISCONNECT the battery, just in case.
Remove the chain guard and if you look to the right of the clutch you will see a black plastic cover with two 6mm Allen bolts in it.
Remove the bolts and cover and behind that is the bendix.
Give it a good spray with brake cleaner.
Put newpaper down as you will find a right mess will get washed out.
A tiny spray of WD40 seeing as it's winter, will suffice.
Pop the cover back on, reconnect the battery and try that.
The chain lube gets really sticky in the cold.

IF your starter doesn't actually spin when you press the button, then it's probably the positive brush lead that has parted company with the the terminal.
A rebuild kit will cure this but let us know first, as there are a few tips to impart before you rip the starter motor apart.
Namely, don't buy it until we find out if it's as genuine Rotax starter or a rubbishy clone.
The kit from a Rotax won't fit the clone starter.
