I have an 2007 engine with an 07 barrel. At my last meeting I rented a 2010 engine for the weekend and straight away I found a few tenths.

I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and the general response was that many drivers are still winning on 07 barrel motors.
In theory meaning its possible if you are a good enough driver.

The main difference I found was that the 2010 was more forgiving than my 07. If I made a small mistake I would get away with it and the quick lap times seemed to come to me with less effort.

I would say if you are just starting out an 03 motor would be fine as a first max engine. As your ability improves you may need to upgrade to something a bit newer.
