I'm with Huxley on not spending much..... but....
You can definitely calculate the carb settings from the plug/head/piston colour... with experience... and that takes time to develop.
For example, many people don't know that you can only be sure that the colour of the plug that you see is the 'ACTUAL' colour of the plug during the race. Ideally, you should have turned off the engine on the final straight after the finish line after a race. Why? Because the engine and plug need to have been at full race temp and not 'corrupted' by a slow drive back to your pit bay with the engine cooling and, consequently, oiling-up. What might have been a beautifully clean, brown plug as it crossed the line MAY be a wet, blackened, dripping, oily mess by the time you can get it out of the head....
John's software isn't just a tool (for example) like a set of camber/caster/tracking lasers which need to be 'interpretted'; John's stuff will tell you what settings to use..... and that's quite impressive. It's one of the items that I WOULD buy until I knew how to set the carb myself. And I'm a renowned cheap-skate!
