Hi Charlie,

You don't say where the smoke was from. If it came from the clutch, (with a very particular smell, once known, never forgotten) then you are burning the clutch linings.

It's very common amongst Cadet drivers to burn clutches, holding the brakes while trying to accelerate, or for example: being stuck on grass/gravel and reving the engine to escape, may cause burning.

If you have a failed oil seal, that will be shown be oil deposits in the outer crankcase area behind the clutch. But more likely is, your clutch is reaching the end of it's life.
Remove the outer cover and examine:

1. Any cracks at the end of the radial slots and round holes in the clutch centre?

2. Any three of the clutch linings worn more than the rest?

3. Clutch cover showing signs of wear or heat (showed by blueing?).

Replace all doubtful parts.
Don't worry, the more time you drive, the better it gets!
