Yet again, someone comes to my rescue.
I thought it was called a Dino and spent a good half hour trawling the net to find mention of it. Of course, google found "Dino karts" and "Dyno kart engines".....
I first saw one at Rye with (I believe) Harm Schuurman driving it. It seemed BRILLIANT engineering. If I remember correctly, it had a 'pass-through' casting of the head so that the air could hit the 'foward-facing' head and still pass out through a series of radial exits.
Anyone got any pictures? I have checked and it was covered in the December 1980 edition of Karting. I was sure I had a copy but I can't find it!
Here's pictures of a Sonic:-
