Alfie, it's usually only the Barrel, not the whoel engine, that was 'turned round'. Secondly, the engines tended to be lower reving than a 'proper' 100cc kart engine, thus the tuned exhaust would need to be longer. Having it at exit from the front of the engine gave the kart more room to fit the longer exhaust.

The current Rotax-Thing doesn't care about exhaust length as they are all identical; hence the current HORROR of the multiple SEVERE direction changes in the exhaust. It was never 'designed' to produce much power (it's a 'leisure motor' witrh pretensions) and it lives up to the design very well.....
