Aquila is definitely in the ball-park. I think I was something like:

Used kart and some spares - Ł650
Clothing, helmet, etc - Ł300
Spare parts / tools to get kart reasonable - Ł200
Seat that fits me - Ł120
Tyres - Ł120
ARKS starter pack and test - Ł130

Now although that lot only adds up to about Ł1500, I also got a used electric start (TAG) engine and a one man kart trolley so I could go racing on my own. Between the two added about Ł1200 to the whole effort, and only worth it if you're going on your own. Jury's still out on whether TAG makes sense. I like it, but it has its own little set of tribulations attached.

Aquila's running budget is also similar to mine, more or less (well actually, less, but experience does seem to lead to lower costs :) )
