The new engines, out of the box, are pretty strong engines. Used engines, depending on age and maintenance, can vary quite substantially (some very good, some very poor). Further, within the price of a new engine is everything you need to run it (carb, airbox, exhaust etc). This is not always the case with used.

If the used engine is around the £300 mark (with carb airbox exhaust) it's worth a gamble as most rebuilds will cost somewhere between £200 and £300. If it's more, you should try it first. The stonkingly good engines are considerably more than this, don't often get sold on the open market and won't give an increase in performance proportional to cost.
