After pccsystems posted such positive views of Mag rims, I ended up buying a set (Douglas LV), and tested them back to back with aluminium alloy rims this afternoon.
A tiny bit quicker, but they feel better (might be from using front hubs, but much more positive on turn in). More importantly, traffic permitting was able to do consistent lap times for up to 15 laps rather than the 5 or 6 I was getting on ally rims. I have also been able to go up on tyre pressure. I prefer the feel of slightly higher pressures, but on ally rims this made lap times slower and caused the tyres to overheat early. On mag rims I did my best times on slightly higher pressures.
Still not sure why they work, but they do appear to control tyre pressures over distance. I'm looking forward to seeing what this means on a race day, pretty confident it will help a lot.
Thanks for all the input, I'm very happy with the outcome.
