I have to agree with the general view that this is being forced through by some industry members because they wish to ensure the Comer dominance of premier cadet racing is broken or to try and create a new revenue stream to their revitalised existing business. The reality in the first year will probably be that very few people will take it up because the proposed weights won't work if you are moving up from Comer of WPT and if they can't get sufficient numbers it will take more than 1 year to establish at FKS or S1 level which will stop others entering.

My logic is, if you have a 10/11 yr old who is probably only over the limit by 3 or 4 Kgs and this is with his smaller Zip/Tony/BRM/Other cadet chassis and smaller W60/WTP motor but you think he is not competitive because of the weight therefore you look into this new class.

However, you then enquire at your chosen Super Cadet dealer (probably situated next to one or other very grand race track!!) who offer you a splendid new chassis and a selection of demon motors which are required to match the varying types of tracks the price is going to be £4 or 5K just to get you started. Having recovered from the shock you ask what it weighs only to find out the new outfit is at least 5 or 6 Kgs heavier than your current cadet equipment because it is bigger to accommodate a larger driver and uses a TAG engine like the WTP which we already know has at least 3 or 4 kgs of battery etc because of the B1/B5 weight difference.
So with the likelihood that your new kart and ever growing driver is going to start on or over the weight limit and the fact you are shelling out probably £5K upwards to get going you will probably feel this is a very expensive stop gap for 1 year. Also as in the 2nd year you are going to struggle to get near the weight limit to go to national level and with those others who have gone the super cadet route now not doing the clubbies because they are doing FKS/S1 you may then struggle to get races as they can’t race you with the cadets or the juniors because of the speed difference and clubs find it difficult to accommodate small classes .

With all of this in mind and the fact that it is quite probable that the brand of demon engine you chose has not turned out the be motor of choice by the majority you then need to invest in 2 or 3 of the now proven engines for year 2 so you can go on and race at national level. I think it is likely that the target audience of heavy 10/11 year olds will decide to struggle on for another year in today’s cadet classes for all of these reasons plus your already very expensive stonking cadet gear has lost you a fortune because nobody wants WTP’s anymore and the days of £10K Comer engines appears to be over.
Now the main point is all this is, if you have been around karting for a little while and understand the current classes I expect like me you might hold on to your cash for an extra year and see what happens. New customers however will now be confronted with a huge number of options if they have a 10/11 year old and how many of them will decide it is too much expense with all these possible changes for class in their first few years of racing so tell the kids sorry we can’t afford this. After all we are just (hopefully) coming out of the worst recession in history
