Sounds like the carb, even a few months stood and they tend to play up. Dodgy oil seals will give you symtoms along the lines of the revs 'hunting' at tickover and or not shutting off cleanly.

Then again, might be worth changing them as a precaution. But a carb rebuild kit would be first on the list.
