thanks for all the replies. I am still running the old style clutch hence have plastic gears. I took the gear cover off today and the oil didnt seem to want to come out. On taking the cover off there was a big mess inside. The balance gear directly behind the drive gear had completely broken off, hence the other balance gear wasnt even being turned. It had obviously got a bit minced up in there with the oil but luckily the water pump gear was still working. Can someone tell me what the balance gears actually do?. What do the gears actually turn inside the engine and what affects would this have had from not turning?. Thanks.
