For new cadets burning out a few clutch's is not uncommon. I know we did the same at the beginning. It usually happens because the kid keeps his foot on the brake while pressing the throttle, especially when they are slowing up to come into pits.
Seat him in the kart while stationary and get him to practice one foot on the other off and vice versa. Remind him of this every time he goes out until he get's his confidence.
Unfortunately there is nothing you can adjust on a WTP clutch to alleviate this problem. Going to PF Buttons is the right thing to do. He will get loads of track time but PF has a really long and tight entry into the pits so you need to make sure he remembers not to brake and throttle at the same time. As a newby you want to be on a 93 sprocket. Good luck.
