"has any club ever tried doing standing starts now most classes have clutches. What would be the main down side of that"
Hooton Park did it for the june meeting last year. It was rubbish and I hope it doesn't appear again this year.
The main problems with it were:
1, Some drivers were putting on huge sprockets so they could pull away at the start and defend for the rest of the race. 2, There was next to no skill involved in getting a good start. Just mash the throttle when the red light went out and your away. 3, So much time was lost at the start that we only got 2 heats and a final of 12 laps. Something you would expect to get in Winter but not in the middle of Summer. 4, It never really cured the problem of first lap carnage.
Rolling starts are fine. It's the drivers that are the problem!
