The clubs vary greatly - having raced non-msa for many years in various classes I have seen a lot of things!
As always it depends on the track and the competition but the same can be said for MSA - once someone does something you also need to be doing it so the cost can increase.
From experience (and were just moving properly into MSA racing) is that the non-MSA racing we have done there is more openess between the competitors.
Safety at all the clubs I raced at was a lot lower than MSA clubs - maybe with the exception of Wildtracks at Chippenham but they now dont have a club.
I love doing both - sometimes the relaxed atmosphere it non-msa is great, but can also be a bit of a nightmare as you could be waiting round for ages for it to start and subsequently finish quite late, organisation too can be awful.
Pro's and con's! oh one more, at some of the non-msa we used to get 30 mins practice on the sunday morning in and out as many times as you like! was brilliant!
As I said were now doing msa, in gearbox - a complete change, looking forward to seeing how it goes!
