" I'm in the midlands and race at kim but also try and practice at shenny, whilton etc and have never even seen a formula blue in the flesh so to speak. Shame "

Unfortunately you have run into the politics of karting.

Clubs control the classes that race at their tracks, often through a vote at the AGM where they vote which classes to race for the year.

So, if you want to race a certain class, then you have to
a) get the motion accepted at the AGM
b) get enough votes at the AGM
c) get more votes than the class that one is going to displace.

It's that latter one that is difficult, when a club doesn't want to disappoint well known club members in a minority by getting rid of their class.

Some tracks will not or cannot accept certain kinds of kart for practice (eg: Gearbox may find it difficult to practice at certain tracks, if they run on a different circuit from the rest, or if there are noise or licence limitations) and there is limited appeal for drivers at a track where there isn't a grid and they are unlikely to race.

Sometimes personalities intrude, any grid needs active encouragement or it withers. Over the last decade TKM has been less encouraged, but in the last couple of years it has seen a resurgence due to the efforts of a couple of people at a couple of tracks. At some tracks there is a trader who understandably pushes one type of kart and not another, which is reflected in the grids.

Having said that, I believe that Blues practice quite often at Whilton Mill but never been able to race there, used to race as Rissington ( I did a couple of NKRA rounds there, so it may have been as an 'invitation', since the NKRA does Cadets, Minimax and Rotax Max as well as Formula Blue) but are rare to invisible at Kimbolton and Shennington etc. It's a case either of luck, being there when someone else is there or going to a track where they are an accepted grid.

The problem, of course, is that watching is never enough, one needs to get out on one and see what the rest of the drivers are like.
