i have been in the alarm industry for 13 years there are several types of batteries drycell or gell and yes the drycell goes hard and they start crackin but testing battery wise buy a act tester matt i dont think you should a car charger because car batteries are 12 volts and have a 400 amp load and a car charger will charge a car battery in 24 hours if you put a 12 volt 7ah it might explode just buy a 12 volt 1amp power supply unit for Ł20 that will trickle charge in 24 hours and if you dont want to use it you just leave in power supply it will not harm the battery
