Because not all chassis are set up with the 'recommended' setting the same as the neutral or centre angle of the yoke. Indeed, with a single offset cassette the 'standard' setting is always likely to be offset away from that centre point.

If one insisted on centre drilling only, then you would be handicapping all those karts.

And as pointed out elsewhere, the people with the resources to create their own centres will also find no difficulty in renoving the whole yoke, rejigging to a new best angle and rewelding.

As for welding in torsion bars, I have just seem a model complete with 'welds'. It was made from plate bolted together and the welds created in plastic metal, using a mould taken from a real weld to give it an authentic profile. Once painted it is indistinguishable from the real thing unless it is scraped. So you can mount your torsion bar with an internal expnding clamp, mould a plastic weld in place and spray in less time that it would take to do the real thing.

The thing is that almost anyone can cheat if they want to cheat.
