Here's one for the old memory banks.

Symptom: Start motor spinning, just about clicking into engage and not connecting onto the starter gear.
Then sometimes starts fine.
fast pressing on starter button would help most of the time.
It felt similar to flat battery
The starter motor was fine.

The 'starter reduction gear' was suggested as being the cause - but on removal of this I discovered the cause was a peice of broken starter motor bolt that had worked it way down to press on the back of the reduction gear, causing it to not spin freely sometimes.
If your top right bolt shears on the starter motor, make sure you clear the thread thats left or it could jam the starter gear, this maybe easier if you remove the clutch/starter gear.
Took ages to sus that one - hope it helps someone in the future.
