instead get a blowtorch and burn the carbon off. dismantle the exhaust then do each piece. use the torch to burn off the carbon, if you hold the torch on it for a minuet or so it will catch alight. keep it on and the carbon will burn away. get a long reach wire brush and use it to remove the excess carbon it should just fall away.you will proberbly have to do it a couple of times depending on how bad it is. should only take about an hour tops.
costic soad is c.r@p it is messy and doesnt get the job done. this will make the exhaust like new mate, but use a dustmask when you do it as make sure you are down wind as the carbon is carsogenic!(not good for you) p.s be carefull to as when it catches alight it really catches alight.
