..is that you introduce a resistive element on the earth/ground that you really don't need.

The connections have to be scrupulously clean and tight, otherwise you can get a mysterious misfire at the top end or even short periods of no ignition as the coil is at its limit at max revs of 14,600, which it wasn't designed to reach under normal circumstances.
