You are making an awful lot of assumptions in those figures QOT. Anyone who lives on a tight budget will know there are always ways of making your money stretch further even if it means some extra effort or sacrifices. Eg growing your own vegetables, collecting discount vouchers or whatever. If that frees up one or two thousand pounds to do some karting (rather than spending it down the pub or on fags) surely that is up to that individual and their family. The fact is that it used to be very possible to race karts on a meagre budget and it should still be possible now.... Unfortunately it's this elitist attitude that is forcing these people out with those that can afford to spend excessive amount, pushing for rule changes at the expense of the little guy. It used to be that those with the money would move into cars or a class with more freedom to spend - but sadly too many people these days want to be a big fish in a small pond.
The MSA need to step in and protect the grass roots of motorsport and make it far more accessable to those on tight budgets. Where there is a will there is a way.
