Don't be put off Ebay.
IMHO
I've used it to try out pro karts, gearbox karts, and both junior and senior tkm to learn about karts have great fun.
Buy a Ł300 tkm extreme off ebay. use it for practise this year (it won't be race legal) and then sell it for much the same you paid for it. You will learn far more than asking people because you will not know the questions to ask.
Clutched is better to start with (no pun) but stripping a clutched sprocket will cost Ł45. Direct drive Ł10.
Also it is not just an initial outlay. Karts cost money just to keep them going plus tooling costs.
