A quicker, and more satisfying method (to my mind) is to use a propane/butane mix blow torch available at any DIY shop or ironmongers.

If you have time split the eaxhust into 3 sections and fire each section to burn off the carbon and oil, if you have less time just heat the outer surface of the whole exhaust.

The carbon and oil just burn off. Take care not to inhale too much of the fumes, and wait until cool to pick up the exhaust !
