Wishing you and your son all the best for season!

If your son is happy with the balance of his kart, I'd say forget about making any changes. When starting out it's bum in seat time that makes the difference. I'm sure it won't be long before your son's lap times start to tumble.

We buy part worn tyres from a local race team and run them for a further 50-60 laps during practice sessions.
