I quite like the new clutch - it seems to be more robust (time will tell), and is simpler in design. I haven't got used to the ringing/clanging sound it makes around certain parts of the track yet!

Both bearing lube and chain lube get into the new drum but only in small quantites. I have seen the chassis rail dripping in chain lube at the end of the day but when the clutch drum is removed there is only a small residue in the corner at the back of the drum and a light film on the shoe. For this reason it is surely not beyond the wit of any scrutineer to tell whether a drum has been deliberately greased or not if inspected prior to racing. Thus:

Clean all drums with brake cleaner
Wipe shoes with brake cleaner
Leave bearings untouched
Mark drums with random paint colour
Allow no lubes in controlled areas
Post race measure drum wall thickness or weigh

This should discourage all but the most determined.

Bearing in mind that we are probably going to be spending a lot of time with our clutch drums removed just before racing, a word of warning regarding the new clutch. DO NOT be tempted to run the engine without the drum fitted, it will permanently spread the shoes. Easily done if you have a last minute carb drama. Cost of error: about 65 quid and having to bump-start the kart for the next race.
