There's nothing on the outside of the engine that will tell you if it needs a rebuild. With TKM you can remove the head and barrel and look for blow past on the piston. Indicates liner is worn and needs a hone. You can also check to see if top ring is free and check its clearance in the liner. It's best to keep a record of time the engine has run and then just change piston and bearings at set intervals. It also depends on what performance you are looking for. I've heard TKM's will run for 90 hours but on the other hand top racers will may be rebuilding every 5-6 hours.
