Normally what happens is that those who are no longer able to afford to race, stop. Its usually because they've lost or 'downsized' their jobs and their disposable income is insufficient to carry out motorsport. There's nothing new here. It happened in the early 1980s and also to an extent in the early 1990s.

This is more a conundrum for organizers than competitors. Grids will thin out. While that was less of an issue in days gone by, as there was a smaller number of classes, today I see this as a more serious problem and maybe something to force the issue of an equivalence between the multitude of formulae.
