Alex,

We have been using a TKM Extreme in the OEKC endurance championships that has 4.5hr races and we have done 6 this season. All we changed was a piston as a matter of course after round 3 and we will now put a new rod and piston in now the season is over.
Itro's advice is spot on. Run a decent oil (310ml per 5l fuel), get the misture a bit rich and gear the motor down. We set ours to reach about 14,000, or 14,500 tops and it was still pretty darn competitive.
If you run to those guidelines the motor will run forever.
