Easy answer is to switch your engine with your friends. If you get a spark on his machine then it is your box, if not it's possibly your backplate.
Check the wire bundle coming out of the backplate, I have seen two cases where a broken wire ther has led to the failure of the engine.
You realise that you dont have to take your friends engine off just to check yours? Just connect the wires, especially the earth, to your engine and press the button. With the plug out you will quickly see whether there is a spark.
However, it is possible to get a single spark, then nothing, you need a regular spark for each cycle of the engine.
One other thought, at one meeting someone changed an entire engine, found that didn't work, then changed powerbox and battery and that didn't work either. The problem was a faulty plug, it was their 'favorite' and they changed it from engine to engine.
