i had trouble with mine to start with. i found that if i changed the fluid every 2 meetings and the pads every three or four meetings they worked better than i needed. DOT 5.1 was what i used to use. ferodo 'soft'pads were about the best i tried.
i also kept all mechanical parts lubricated, suprising how much that helped in feel.
(this was up to 2005 may be different now?)
