Koden & V2 helmets tend to be more reasonably priced than Arai etc and comply with the same CMR regs as Richydehav says you need a helmet which complies with CMR regs which are designed to match cadet / junior use better - mainly related to a reduced helmet weight.
For non MSA or for practice at any MSA track you don't need to comply with the regs and can purchase a much cheaper helmet maybe to a motorcycle standard such as AUC gold and it will still be a very good helmet. You only need a CMR helmet for his MSA ARKS test and MSA racing on race day only.
If you are looking to stick with karting then invest in a CMR. If you are looking to just practice and are not sure if he will eventually race at MSA level then go for the AUC gold helmet for your local motorcycle shop.
Helmet fit is number one priority and don't underestimate how relatively tight the fit needs to be - little chubby cheeks squashed up making little eyes look a little piggy is good, slack and looking more cool is bad!!
You can practice and race at NON MSA at Hooton or Fulbeck LKRC / CA Karting do a very popular non MSA event every third weekend of the month - the track is next door to PFI circuit near Newark / Grantham. £50 for the whole weekend - race day & practice day, or £35 just for race day.
Or if you can make it to racing for buttons at PFI on a Monday night 5pm to 8pm set every two weeks for owner drivers, you get a lot of track time in practice and they observe the pace of all the drivers and then set mini races for fast, medium and slow drivers. A great way to get track time and feed into it without much commitment.
