As will be obvious from my first post in this thread I knew nothing about 50 mm axles, never had one , seen one bare, or wanted one. I would have been put off by, the impossibility of moving the rears in for the wet, the obvious difficulty in staightening such a thin gauge tube, the enormous and heavy bearings required, and a general impression that this was progress backwards for commercial and 'fashion' reasons. I am now told that 6 or 7.5 mm holes are drilled in highly stressed areas of the axle!!!!!! and flats filed on the light gauge tube.!!!! Was there really any problem with 40mm or even 30 mm axles. I had none. With regard to OP question I think it depends on the hubs and how they are used. If the design is good giving good clamping action along the hub and they are not run overhung then I think you would be okay to redrill these holes only ideally smaller ones as mentioned by RI above.but the body of experienced opinion disagrees.
