Hello people
I'm after a bit of help from those in the know. I'm not actually a karter so I'm sorry for abusing you! I do however use Kart running gear on my chosen race vehicle and trying to work out whats what with the 6 inch superkart tyres.
A bit of back ground.........
I race a mini sidecar as part of the British minimoto championships. We do tracks such as Llandow, Whilton and Rowrah. Typical lap times are around the low 57's at Llandow 'two up' on a 200cc four stroke road bike engined outfit that is a similar size to a kart (with one corner chopped off). We have a five speed box and low 20's HP. all up weight is around 280kg's with rider and passenger on board and hence with only two main wheels we run higher pressures than you lot in the mid 20psi range. We top out at about 60mph on the straights.
So far have been using 5" rims with Mojo D3's, Vega FH/XM/XP. So you could say the softer compounds are where we at, our races are quite short and we dont use warmers.
I'm now looking to try out some 6 inch rims for a number of reasons but struggling a little bit to work out the tyre makes and compounds. There also seems to be a few sizes out there. What I do know is that I'd like an 11" diameter front @5 or 5.5" wide. The front brake disc is getting a proper pasting with the 10"tyres so the extra clearance would be nice plus extra width as the front see's a lot of load and gets hotter than the rear when using 4.5"wide tyres. A 12" or 11.5" rear @8" wide with a nice soft compound feels like it would be worth a try too.
Currently I have discovered:
Vega - HS
Dunlop - DDS, DDM, DDH
Bridgestones - ????????
Maxxis - ???????
Wets?????? I have a set of Bridgestone wets already but not tried them yet.
We have no rules on tyres so it would be very handy to work out how these different makes/compounds fair against each other grip and size wise.
Any info or help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Jibber
