First outing for the new helicam filming at Super 1 Sunday. As there has been so much interest over the weekend I have posted a few minutes of raw footage from the start of IAME Cadet race and first few laps.
Helicam is a Radio controlled DJI S800 Hexacopter. Full details of the aircraft are on www.super1tv.co.uk, but it has GPS software to control flight parameters, a zenmuse camera gimbal stabilising the camera image even during aggressive flight manoeuvres and high winds. In the event of a catastrophic failure of the radio signal from the transmitter to the aircraft, an onboard failsafe system would take over the flight autonomously, enabling the aircraft to fly itself, returning it to its original take off point and land (using GPS). There are a whole host of other features that make this the world's leading aerial video system, as used by Top Gear to film their aerial footage. Camera has a fixed (prime) lens (i.e. no zoom). Gimbal is designed for this type of lens only.
Max. airspeed in these clips was 16.6 metres a second (37.1 mph) downwind from the loop, around 12.2 m/s into the wind (27.3 mph) towards the loop. Altitude varied from 65-147ft (Max Legal altitude for UAV's in the UK is 400ft). Offers an alternative film angle perspective showing the spread of karts on the track.
