Maybe the Pooled engine idea is better for a one off event, say the O Plate or Kartmasters? That way if you get a dog of a motor you only need to worry about it for 1 weekend (and if you don't win it's not the end of the world, as people only remember the guys who win these events, nobody cares if you finished 2nd or below).
In fact it could be a good way of boosting the prestige of the O Plate. Make it say a 4 day event. Pick up engines Thursday morning, run them in that afternoon. All day practice on Friday to get on the pace and then Qually, Heats, Finals on Saturday and Sunday. Give the winner a Wildcard to World Finals/free entry to a S1 round etc, maybe some extra awards if the winner is a clubbie? Make the venue somewhere central to encourage more entries and have the event date during a period mid-season when there's a big gap in the S1 calender?
I think the uptake on pooled engines is likely to be better in this type of event. As too many people have invested on monster engines and won't want to give them up to be able to race in the main British Championship. If it was a brand new class (cough IAME X30 cough) then it might be a different story.
